When did you start djing/producing? What got you into it/ why did you start?

Back in 1998 I started buying and collecting vinyl. At the time all the music I wanted to listen to Garage, UK Hip-Hop, Drum & Bass was only available on vinyl so I bought some rubbish decks and becoming a DJ was pretty much an inevitability.

Who/what are your major influences?

In all honesty to many to mention but I'd have to sight Massive Attack and Liam Howlett as the two main influences which led to me falling in love with music.

Who would you love to collaborate with? (1 realistic, 1 fantasy)

There's a lot of producers I really like in the scene but I'd love to get in the studio with Redlight I love the way he gets all his tracks to sound and the vibe they have are a cut above most other people. I'd love to get in the studio with Paul Simon, but somehow I can't see him vocalising a dance track.... Although never say never!

Vinyl, CD or digital?

Having spent years ruining my back carry two bags of vinyl to gigs I can confidently say digital DJ'ing. I would love to play on vinyl through Serato but you can't trust clubs to have serviced working turntables so unfortunately I now play of Serato CD's.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on a gig?

When I was out at Hideout Festival last year the boat party I was playing on sailed into a rain storm. So we had to quickly relocate the set-up to the captain's cabin! But all the ravers weere great and kept on dancing in the rain it definitely made it really memorable.

What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?

Probably at Snowbombing last year the Prodigy where headlining and I'd never seen them before. Needless to say possibly some of my mind is still up that mountain!

Where’s your favourite place to play?  why?

Definitely Fabric, the set-up is brilliant and the monitoring is just perfect. It's always such a pleasurable experience playing there.

Do you think anyone can learn to DJ and/or Produce? What’s your best tip for beginners?

I do think anyone can DJ or produce I'm not so sure that everyone can make a living out of it. I think the best advice I can give is know your tracks inside out, practice constantly and be prepared to play for free. I'm always quite shocked with some people who expect to be paid almost as soon as they've started dj'ing.

What do you listen to most in a track?

In terms of searching for stuff to play out I tend to concentrate on hooks and lead lines as there has to be something for the crowd to latch on to. Above that I love a good cut up glitchy vocal :)

What are you hoping to achieve in the long run/ whats your ambition?

Become lord of the rats and take over the world.

Where will you be playing next/ what projects do you have lined up?

The next real big thing is Fabric on the 13th of Jan but I'm constantly DJ'ing all my dates are always updated on my Facebook -->  https://www.facebook.com/djrattusrattus Project wise I'm hard in the studio still trying to perfect my production is something I really want to focus on moving forward.

What are your favourite ways to find new tracks?

I get sent a lot of great music but I still do the obligatory trawling of soundcloud and beatport. I'm not bothered if it takes all day you always come across real gems that no-ones heard of doing that.

What’s the future of Dance music? Who do you think we should keep our ears out for?

I think it's clear everything's going more deeper and housier at the moment. Some people are making some fantastic Garage and it's great to see that returning. I think it's safe to say crowds are becoming tired of the bass war we've been in for the past couple of years.

Why is music important?

If you cut me I bleed it.... I went to the doctors about this and I'm waiting for the test results.

What are your 10 of your favourite tracks at the moment?

Pusherman – Shake It Off
Mista Men – Baby Cham
DJ Narrows – Enter The Dance
Highest Order - Conqueror
Kry Wolf – Love Noise
Photonz - Spectre
Zinc – Unlike Me
Azari & III - Reckless
DKS - Chas

STAR EYES INTERVIEW

Star Eyes, the " Queen of Brooklyn Bass", DJ/Producer of Trouble & Bass and former editor-in-chief of XLR8R, is the Coco Electro mixer this week and what a fine job that gal did do. Check the podcast to listen again but now here is the delightful interview I had with madam herself.

When did you start djing/producing? What got you into it/ why did you start?
Records like The Prodigy first album, Orbital, Acen "Trip II the Moon," and 2 Bad Mice got me into DJing years ago. I was obsessed with the music and the culture and needed to be a part of it. I've worked on tracks on and off for years, but really got serious about it two years ago when I quit my day job to party rock full-time.

Who/what are your major influences?
My friends are probably the biggest day to day influence, but I dunno.. some specific to me I guess: jungle, purple, The Cure, Suburban Base records, Death Guild, E-40, Southside LA warehouse parties, strobes & fog, listening to music in cars, Trinere, nitrous oxide, Paper Rad, the beach, dropped Hondas, Twist & Amaze, Smurfs, UK grime, Scooby-Doo, Depeche Mode.

Who would you love to collaborate with? (1 realistic, 1 fantasy)
Anything is possible right? For the more realistic, Tomb Crew, Zola Jesus, or Riko. Fantasy would be E-40, Andrew Eldritch from Sisters of Mercy, Diamond from Crime Mobb, or Martin Gore.

Vinyl, CD or digital?
At the end of the day, vinyl. It never loses its charm.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on a gig?
The worst gig of my life was in Atlanta in the 90s with the Formation Records crew. The party had 10 people there, the fuses in the building kept blowing, there were pimps and prostitutes in my hotel parking lot, and I got to the airport only to find out the promoter didn't buy me a flight home. Somehow I ended up flying home in first-class for the first time and becoming good friends with John B, who I later collaborated with on some tracks.

What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?
An old-school rave night at Bagley's warehouse in London in about 1998 is pretty memorable. Also going to this club called The Hole in NYC before it closed. And I think it's fair to say that seeing The Prodigy, Moby, and Cybersonik in Hollywood Palladium in 1993 changed my whole life.

Where’s your favourite place to play? why?
Anywhere in England, especially Fabric in London and Stealth in Nottingham. People really respond to my music and as a result I feel like I can wild out and push the envelope. Plus, I love British food (weird I know).

Do you think anyone can learn to DJ and/or Produce? What’s your best tip for beginners?
Some people have more talent, rhythm, and ideas than others, but anyone with a passion can learn. My tips for those starting out: put in work, don't be afraid to ask questions/do research, and pay close attention to what your favorite DJ/producers are doing and learn from it. To be honest, I think hard work and sticking with it is more important than just raw talent in a lot of cases.

What do you listen to most in a track?
The bass, the bass, the bass.

What are you hoping to achieve in the long run/ whats your ambition?
I want to get to the point where I can play a full set of my own tracks that I am psyched on and possibly make an album or two. Collaborate with a lot more people, go DJ in Australia & New Zealand, and learn how to surf better.

Where will you be playing next/ what projects do you have lined up?
My next release, "The Night," is out mid-January on Trouble & Bass with remixes from Deathface, Hostage, Kkoee, and Bad Looks. I have some tracks with UFO! from San Francisco and some with Grizzly's 5kinandBone5 (under the name Dark Ages) that should be out in the near future. Several gigs on the U.S. West Coast and hopefully get to UK/EU around March 2012!

What are your favourite ways to find new tracks?
I get promos and check out online stores (Juno/Beatport/Boomkat/etc) just like everyone else. I also like to listen to the radio for ideas -- there's a lot of songs that have really wack lyrics but great instrumentals. I like to bring out old records from the collection and old songs people never really heard the first time around; they sound new again.

What’s the future of Dance music? Who do you think we should keep our ears out for?
I dont know what the future of dance music is -- that's what makes it so exciting and addictive! I think the technologies coming out from Serato, Native Instruments, Ableton, and so on are going to change what gets made (and how fast it gets made!). Some people I'm checking include Low Limit, Cosmic Revenge, Comma, Ursa Major, Wheez-ie, Clicks N Whistles, Bad Looks, D.O.K, Champion DJ, and of course all the people in my chart and my mix.

Why is music important?
Honestly, I feel like music has saved my life. There have been thousands of times when things were so messed up and getting lost in music was the only thing that made me feel better. It's a really important universal way of communicating and understanding that can have so many more shades than words. Since I started making music, the process has revealed a lot of interesting things to me about my personality.

What are your 10 of your favourite tracks at the moment?

Kingdom: Hood By Air Theme
Dark Ages: Evil Mind
Little Jinder: Whatever We Want (Kastle Remix)
J-Sweet: Can't Stop My Grime (Mr Mitch Remix)
UFO! & Kuru: Freak
Star Eyes & UFO!: Never Not
Star Eyes: The Night (Hostage Remix)
Sinden feat. B-Side: G Like Me (5kinandBone5 For the Streets Remix)

Tyga: Rack City

MIKIX THE CAT INTERVIEW

This week's Coco..Electro heard the return of the Coco Electro Mix and making the return a successful one was
MikiX The Cat. DJ/Producer signed to Trouble & Bass and  founder of ADD CAT Records. As always I also asked a few non-too-probing-yet-highly-enlightening questions for your pleasure. So to find out more about the man behind the (delicious) sound, read below.

When did you start DJing/producing? What got you into it/ why did you start?
I started to produce music when I was 16, basically I was doing some edits of breakbeats, jazz, electro, soul fusion etc for my dance crew, training on loop so I didn't have to touch the CD player between 2 footworks.

Later on I kind of followed in the foot-steps of my brother who was a beat maker and rapper at the time. When he wasn't around I was jumping into his room to practice making beats with his MPC. He taught me how to sample and all the basics. I made my first club music when I was 20 “Dead Disco”, using a demo version of Ableton live... I tried to make a disco tune ahah! But I was very happy and proud to have my music OUT so I stayed in the electronic music scene and released my first “hit” Freeze EP 9 months later on Trouble and Bass.

I then started to tour all around the world which meant I could quit my boring studies and 2 jobs to focus on music instead :) With DJing, I first trained for myself and for my DJ crew (Bboy for life ! ) When I was 19 I found a little job as resident dj in a bar in Paris, I was supposed to play only house music so it was the best way for me to try tunes and see how people would react, it was a real pleasure to make people dance, now I'm 24 and I still love it!

Who/what are your major influences?
My major influences are Quincy Jones, Madlib, Theo Parish, overall J Dilla!

Who would you love to collaborate with? (1 realistic, 1 fantasy)
Snoop Dogg, and my fantasy, because he passed away, would be to spend a day in the studio with J Dilla !

Vinyl, CD or digital?
Vinyl!!!! The feeling you know! But I play with Serato to test demos live.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on a gig?
I’m always stressed before a gig because I always have problems with vinyl turntables, and when they won’t work the thing is that you have to look pro and act like everything is ok so people may think “s**t this guy is a so bad DJ” ahahah it’s happened 3 time and I felt really bad … :’(

What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?
All nights are different, different promoter, crowd, city etc so the best night is of course when all your friends in the city come to see you play and everybody has a good time.

Where’s your favourite place to play? Why?
Berlin is cool because they enjoyed sweet music and go crazy when you play groovy beats! You don’t need to play a HEAVY track to drive them crazy I love it!

Do you think anyone can learn to DJ and/or Produce? What’s your best tip for beginners?
Of course, this is what’s been happening for the last 2 years; everybody is a music producer and DJ now. If I have a tip I will advise you to stay in something you like and to not follow the hype! Just be yourself even if people don't understand you, we need some new faces to make the difference between all the “music producers”, and first of all make it with love!

What do you listen to most in a track?
The texture for example the quality of the drums and the groove, the Melody, I don’t listen to the structure I don’t care if there is no break or if it’s a 3mn track the most important for me it’s the “texture” more it’s crazy better is it. I don’t like 100% software music, the same round kick and perfect snare in all that production … I like it dirty!

What are you hoping to achieve in the long run/ what’s your ambition?
My ambition is to produce a Band or any kind of singer. Making my imprint ADD Cat Records now hehe, and if I have time finish my fashion line project …to be a legend!

Where will you be playing next/ what projects do you have lined up?
Exactly the same as my ambition! But for the moment my priority is ADD Cat Records and to make people understand the “sound” of this label.

What are your favourite ways to find new tracks?
I dig around on beatport every sunday, it’s long but I have my fave records label, some small, some big and I also dig around on facebook/soundcloud, friends of friends of friends etc and people who send me promo/demos or add me on soundcloud.

What’s the future of Dance music? Who do you think we should keep our ears out for?
Too many names to drop and If i forget one, peeps gonna kill me ! but I like how things are going in the UK and in Paris/france. We're starting to have “our song” again, things are more and more interesting.
But yeah the future of dance music is on ADD Cat Records of course !

Why is music important?
Because it’s makes you feel good and cheers you up more with frequency !

What are your 10 of your favourite tracks at the moment?
1 Sasha, krister Linder - Cut Me Down ( Ryan Davis remix )
2 Bodika - Acid Battery
3 Runaway - Indoor Pool
4 Momma’s Boy - soulchops
5 Mykle Anthony - Best Of (Deniz’s freestyle version )

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!

My favourite band ever (alongside CocoRosie), Little Dragon, have released their third album!!

After somehow managing to caputure all my loves in sound form previously with Little Dragon and Machine Dreams, they've only gone and completed my year with the release of Ritual Union on Peacefrog and EMI.

Recently LD have had a spurt of popularity off the back of their collaberation with Gorillaz and SBTRKT so this release has received a lot of attention. This is awesome and I'm so excited that LD are getting all the exposure they deserve!! But... I do think they need be recognised for the magicality and sense-caressing charm of their previous releases too.

So if you haven't heard Little Dragon (2007) or Machine Dreams (2009)...do so first, fall in love with Little Dragon yourself before experiencing Ritual Union..you will love them so much more for it. Trust.

Check out 16 Bit's remix of this track too!

And after that, go get yourself all emersed in Ritual Union...It's beautiful and it is Little Dragon through and through.

You can buy it HERE!

And if you can't wait any longer you can stream it HERE!!

I also had the pleasure of seeing them live last year in Leeds...the best experience i can recommend to you. seriously. They are so respectful of their fans, stretching out of their tracks into 6/7 mintues synthy-bass symphonies so along with the spectacle of Yukimi's mezmorising vocals and dance moves, you will experience a feeling of allowing yourself to fall backwards without knowing whats behind you and being caught in  a cloud of cotton wool and caressing hands...or something similar.

P.S. If you can't get enough of Yukimi's breath-takingly enchanting voice, you can hear more of her with Koop and Hird!

20110708

Bit late I know but I've been moving house & tings!

Here's the last show of my second academic year! Eeek scary times.

The Monday Night Mix came from up and coming Bristolian DJ & Producer WOZ.

Here's what he had to say for himself

what is your real name? (if you give it away)
Ash Westlake

when did you start djing/producing?
Ive been producing for almost two years and djing for four years.

who/what are your major influences?
I think the city of Bristol has a big part to play. I always get loads of ideas just standing at the back of a rave in Bristol. I take a lot of influence from older garage and jungle, i also try and listen to a lot of word music beacause the instruments and rhythms are amazing.

what are your favourite djing or production tools?
I'm not gunna say too much but i use logic and ni maschine.

what are you hoping to achieve in the long run/ whats your ambition?
I just want to be making music for the rest of my days, enjoying it and hopefully make a living out of it. I'd also like to travel the world djing.

what projects do you have lined up?
At the mo I have an e.p coming out soon on London label 'blackbutter records'. I also have another e.p due late August on Bristol label 'dropdown records'. Both of which im overhyped for! :)

who would you love to or dream to collaborate with? (can be as real or phatastical as you wish)
I'd love to make a track with Shystie, just to make a hard club baanga.. Producer wise id love to work with Mumdance, i love everything he makes.
Dream wise i would have loved to have made a track or just be in the studio with man like J Dilla (RIP). Dude's a Hero and a Genius!

what are your favourite ways to find new tracks?
Radio is usually the one for me if not i'll just check the hype on twitter or keep onto artist mixes.

who do you think we should keep our ears out for in 2011 (excluding yourself ha)
Melé's smashing it at the moment!.. A good friend of mine who goes by the name 'NightDiving' needs to get the attention he deserves this year! and just watch out for the new genre 'Moombahton', gunna destroy the clubs this summer!

what are your 10 of your favourite tracks at the moment?
